Annai Trust Programmes

a) St. Joseph Matriculation School:

Among the greatest of all services that can be rendered by men to Almighty God, is education and training of poor disadvantaged rural children, so that they can foster by grace in the way of salvation, growing like pearls of divine bounty in the shell of education and will be one day the jewel in the crown of abiding glory.

Realizing the importance of education, the Board of Trustees of Annai Charitable and Educational Trust started St. Joseph Matriculation School in the year 2002 with 27 students and 3 teachers, which has grown into a legally approved High School by the Directorate of Matriculation Schools, Government of Tamilnadu and socially recognized by the local community. The school is housing around 430 students right from LKG to 10th Std with more than 25 full time and 15-part time teachers.

b) Remedial and Supplementary Coaching to Poor Students/Slow Learners:

Rural children find it very difficult to cope up with the class room teaching. They need assistance at home studies or extra coaching to understand the difficult subjects taught in class rooms. Since their parents are illiterate, they are unable to help them in home studies. Even the educated parents find it very difficult to t teach subjects like English, Science and Mathematics. When children are not helped at home studies, they tend to get less marks in tests and ultimately fail in core subjects. Therefore, Annai Charitable & Educational Trust has been conducting Remedial/Supplementary Coaching to the poor and slow learners in and around villages near the School. We motivate our teachers to spare two hours in the evening to coach the poor and slow learners in subjects like English, Science and Maths. The children are facilitated to clear their doubts in subjects taught in class rooms. Monthly Tests are conducted to assess the children’s performance. This practice enables the poor/weak/slow learners to score comparatively high marks in the finals.

c) Supply of Educational Materials to Poor & differently abled children:

The parents of rural and disabled children being extremely poor, often they are unable to meet expenses related to educational materials required for their children. They could not afford to get them proper Uniforms, Shoes, Note Books, Guides, Instrument box and Stationeries. Consequently, the children are getting discouraged and experience stigma and discrimination at school and they get dropout from schools. While still others though continuing to go to school, they are unable perform well in studies and fail in subjects. This ultimately leads them to drop from school and either to become a child bread winner or choose their parental occupation on the longer run. Realizing the importance of education of rural poor and differently abled children, Annai Charitable and Educational Trust identifies and supplies the poor and disabled school children with educational materials such as Uniforms, Shoes, Note Books, Guides, Instrument box and Stationeries in partnership with Giveindia by raising funds from Giveindia Platform.

d) Scholarship Assistance to Poor Children:

Similarly, the parents of poor children since they are agricultural coolies, though they could afford to get Uniforms, Shoes, Note Books, Guides, Instrument box and Stationeries, they are unable to pay the tuition and other fee(s) either fully or partly since they do not have a sustained income. In such cases, Annai Charitable and Educational Trust identifies such

children and help them with scholarship assistance in partnership with Giveindia by raising funds from Giveindia Platform.

e) Supply of Dresses to Poor women and widows:

Widows not only suffer with social and economic sanctions but also face many psychological consequences, loneliness and in many cases deprivation causing emotional disturbances and imbalance. Widowhood is considered still a curse and family support is missing at times. Widowhood represents a “social death” for women. It is not merely that they have lost their husbands, the main breadwinner and supporter of their children, but widowhood robs them of their status and consigns them to the very margins of society where they suffer the most extreme forms of discrimination and stigma. Annai Charitable & Educational Trust with every year helps the aged women and widows through supply of clothes in partnership with Giveindia by raising funds from Giveindia Platform.

f) Livelihoods Assistance to Poor Women:

Annai Charitable and Educational Trust helps poor women from the surroundings of Venthanpatti and helps them with livelihood assistance. Based on their economic status, women are supplied with Sewing Machines or Wet Grinders free of cost. They make their survival out of the income from the enterprises.

g) General Awareness Programmes:

Annai Charitable and Educational Trust through their school teachers and students spreads public awareness on Dengue, Malaria, HIV/AIDS, and the like periodically and we also work with the Health Workers and Government Officials on Polio Awareness Programmes. We take care to issue pamphlets specifying the causes, effects and preventive measures of such syndromes in local language in order to prevent and reduce the infections among the poor people.

We also sensitize and raise awareness on Global Warming, Climate Change and Water Conservation and Sanitation issues. We arrange to plant trees in the roadsides and the wastelands in the villages in order to protect the environment
